Collecting Trip June 9th at 10am starting near Avon...open to first 15 to sign up.

New Date for collecting trip is June 9th. All other information is the same

Bill Flowers is hosting a native species collecting trip May 5th at 10am. You must have a fishing license to attend and it is open to the first 15 people who sign up. We have 13 spots left.

If interested in attending please contact me. I will only give out the address of where we will be meeting to those who are going. There will be two stops in this trip. You will get in the water. We will also only keep the fish that you yourself plan to keep and take home. Again if interested let me know so I can add you to the list.

    Mike and Bill,

At this time, I will say yes. We are waiting to find out when my wife's surgery will be. IF this changes to a no answer, I WILL let you know ASAP !!!!

    Jeff
It all starts with one tank. Then one day we decide we need a second one. Two leads to 3..... Next thing you know, we are joining AAA groups like this one !!!

Just thought I would touch base with everyone on the collecting trip. The creek we were going to collect in runs near my house and is presently about 10 feet above normal. This means at the two collecting sights it is probably running about 6 feet above normal. I will try to get up there tomorrow and if not, I will get up there Friday morning to check things out and post here if we are still going to collect. It doesn't look good tho. They are predicting more rain in the next couple of days.

I really wish I could have gone with you guys yesterday. Saturdays are just too busy at the shop for me to get away too often. Glad you guys got some cool fish. One of these days I will get me some darters.

Very cool. How well do those rainbow darters do in captivity? Has anybody spawned them? One of these days I will go on one of these collecting trips. I really want to but Saturdays are difficult.

You should see the Darters around March or April. This is his bland colors. The darters do well in captivity as long as you keep them in a species tank. They can't compete for food with aggressive eaters like the shiners. They try to compete, but end up burning themselves out by swimming up into the water column. Their swim bladder is highly modified for them to live on the bottom. They also like cooler temperatures such as the low 70's or lower. They will survive at higher temperatures, but burn out quicker since their metabolism is higher. By the way according to DNR records their is 30 species of Darters in Indiana. I haven't seen half of them yet.
They have been bred in captivity, tho I haven't tried, yet. They need a cool down period in the winter where the water drops to 40 degrees for about 2 months. Also the lighting period needs to be shortened during that time, too. They tend to spawn around 65 - 70 degrees and usually laying their eggs in the sand. The Johnny darter will lay their eggs on the roof of a cave and then the male will guard them.
One other thing, they love snails. For an experiment one time I threw 50 Ramshorn snails into a tank with two Greensides. By that evening all I had was empty shells.

Which native species loves snails, Johnny darters or the Rainbow darters?
